An electric gate is a powerful piece of machinery, and like any mechanical and electrical system, it needs to be inspected and maintained regularly to operate safely.
A gate safety inspection is not simply a service visit to check that the gate is working.
It is a structured assessment of the entire system against the relevant safety standards, carried out to identify any risks and to make sure the gate continues to operate in a way that protects everyone who uses it.
Here is what a thorough electric gate safety inspection involves and why it matters.
Why Are Gate Safety Inspections Important?
Electric gates are subject to UK health and safety legislation, including the Machinery Directive and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations.
As a gate owner, you have a legal duty to make sure that your gate is safe and that it is maintained in a safe condition. This applies to both residential and commercial gate owners, though the obligations are more extensive for commercial, public sector and educational sites.
A gate that is not regularly inspected and maintained can develop faults that significantly increase the risk of entrapment, crush injuries or other serious accidents. These risks are not always obvious to the untrained eye, which is why periodic inspection by a qualified engineer is so important.
What Does A Gate Safety Inspection Cover?
Visual Inspection Of The Gate & Structure
The inspection begins with a thorough visual assessment of the gate leaves, posts, hinges, tracks and any associated structural elements.
The engineer will look for signs of physical damage, corrosion, wear or misalignment that could affect the safe operation of the gate. Gate leaves that are warped, hinges that are worn or posts that have moved can all affect the way the gate operates and the forces it exerts as it opens and closes.
Safety Device Testing
This is one of the most critical elements of any gate safety inspection. Electric gates must be fitted with appropriate safety devices to detect obstructions and prevent the gate from applying excessive force to a person or object in its path.
These devices typically include photocell beams, which detect an obstruction in the gate's path and stop or reverse the gate's movement, and pressure-sensitive safety edges, which are fitted to the leading edges of the gate leaf and trigger a stop or reversal if they make contact with an object.
During the inspection, the engineer will test all safety devices to confirm that they are functioning correctly and within the force limits specified in the relevant standards.
Any safety device that is not working correctly must be repaired or replaced before the gate is returned to normal operation.
Motor & Control System Check
The motor unit and control board will be inspected and tested to check that they are operating within their specified parameters.
The engineer will check for signs of wear, overheating or water ingress in the motor housing, verify that the control board is responding correctly to all inputs and test the emergency release mechanism that allows the gate to be opened manually in the event of a power failure or system fault.
Force Testing
One of the most important measurements taken during a gate safety inspection is the force exerted by the gate at its leading edge and at any potential entrapment points.
Under the relevant standards, the maximum permissible force at the leading edge of a powered gate is 400 newtons during normal operation, reducing to 25 newtons in the secondary action phase after contact has been made.
A gate that exceeds these limits poses a serious risk of crush injury and must be adjusted or its safety devices recalibrated before it can be considered safe.
Documentation & Certification
At the conclusion of the inspection, the engineer will produce a written report setting out the findings, any defects identified and the actions taken or recommended to address them.
For commercial and public sector sites, this documentation forms part of the safety file for the gate installation and should be retained as evidence that the gate has been properly maintained and inspected.
How Often Should A Gate Safety Inspection Be Conducted?
For domestic gates, an annual inspection is generally considered appropriate.
For commercial, educational and public sector sites where the gate operates more frequently and where the consequences of a failure are more serious, more frequent inspections (typically every six months) are recommended. High-traffic sites may require even more regular attention.
